Shelly ‘Spikes First’ Duncan

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Spikin’ Shelly

Well you can see it for yourself, it was a dirty play. And Gomes had every right to stick up for his infielder by going after Duncan. What Gomes didn’t know is that Duncan is a mountain of a man.  But that is besides the point.  I wonder if Shelly did this on purpose?  He clearly went for the groin and not Iwamura’s glove.

I think what got overlooked was Shelly’s aggressive running; he tried to stretch a single into a double.  If he was faster, he would have made it to second base with ease.  That is what coaches look for in Spring Training.

The real issue of this game was the errant throw by Heath Phillips. This was apparently in retaliation to the collision at home plate the last game against the Rays. Phillips had hit the batter and was immediately ejected. This was a good move for a couple different reasons by Joe Girardi. Phillips probably will be suspended, but he will also probably not make the 25 man roster out of spring training. This suspension will have to be administered when Phillips is sent to Triple A. This is better than Wang getting ejected and suspended (I think you get the idea). Also, Girardi is clearly making a statement that he is running the show and will retaliate when need be. In years past, I have noticed that Torre was hesitant at times, when retaliation was expected. Gotta love the new Joe.

Self Before Country?

Thursday, March 13, 2008

As an individual who enjoys most sports, sometimes I find a sports story that really fires me up. And that was the case today when it was reported that Andy Roddick will not compete for the United States in the Olympics this summer. Instead of participating in the most important sporting event in the entire world, he will need to fine tune his play in a tournament before the U.S. Open, which is one of the four tennis majors.

Even though tennis is an individual sport, I really don’t think that decision is solely his. I think his teammates and captain need to address this issue. If he doesn’t care enough to represent the U.S. in the Olympics, then I could care less about him and his career. That may seem a little harsh, but I can’t respect people who have no time for their country. He clearly doesn’t want to wear the American flag across his chest and compete against the best the world has to offer. I don’t know if the U.S. Open and the Olympics coincide with each other, but doesn’t he think that the Olympics will help prepare him physically and mentally the most for the U.S. Open?

When I first saw Roddick play, I was enamored by his attitude and skill set. He came on strong early in his career and actually won the U.S. Open, which happens to be his only ATP Major victory. Since then, he has been the biggest disappointment and bust in the history of American tennis. He may be the 6th ranked tennis player in the world, but he doesn’t deserve to be. I have a feeling that this won’t be the end of this issue. This is nothing but a selfish act and having a lack of pride; oh how I despise people like that.  And please, as my friend Ceci pointed out, there is only you person worthy of being call ARod.
