It is that time of the year when my job takes over my life. I always wanted to work in baseball, so I guess it isn’t all that bad. Anyway, something has to give and sadly Quite Yankly was sacrificed. I sincerely apologize to all the loyal readers and I will try to post on my off days. But there will be a few days where I will be exhausted or I haven’t seen the Yankees game. Enough of that.
There has been lots of transactions and/or moves by the Yankees that need to be touched upon. First and foremost, Joba finally made his first start for the Yankees. I did not watch the game, but I do know that he didn’t fair very well. He only gave up one hit but walked four and threw a ton of pitches in less than three innings of work. I know he was on a strict pitch limit and the Yankees would like to stretch him on out slowly…but why have him throw for 3-5 innings and then blowout the bullpen. Heck, just send him down and stretch him out in AAA. We can’t be fooling around like this as the Rays and Red Sox are both running away with the division. (don’t expect the Rays to keep this up) We should bring up some spot starters and rotate them until Joba is finally ready. I just don’t trust the bullpen committee.
Also, Jorge Posada is back. I just hope everything is fine, but I just have a bad feeling. Yes, I might have jinxed things. We really need him to be healthy. Our offense is now intact and I would expect them to start mashing any day now.
Giese and Patterson have been brought up. Can anyone tell me how they have looked? I know they both had rough outings before. Ensberg was designated for assignment. Not a surprise. We need the extra room for an arm. With Kennedy now out and Hughes sidelined, the Yankees need all the help they can get. What about Mussina? 9 wins…that’s crazy. Good for him. I am waiting for Melancon and Cox to come up to help out the bullpen.
The Yankees should start rolling now as the Red Sox have a lot going on right now. Manny is fighting with teammates, Papi is hurt, and suspensions were issued for the brawl yesterday. Couldn’t have planned it any better myself.
And now to the important news…the draft! The Yankees took high school flamethrower Gerrit Cole with their first pick in the draft. He can sure throw the hell out of the baseball but is still very raw. He is a Scott Boras client and is considered to demand a lot of money, but the Yankees should give him what he wants. To be honest I was a little upset with their second pick in the draft. They chose a left handed pitcher Jeremy Bleich out of Stanford. He was certainly a reach. I thought the Yanks should have drafted Timothy Mellvile with this pick. I don’t know much about the other picks, but I have seen Erik Lovett play. He was D2 National Player of the Year last year. He played for Mount Olive College and they won the D2 National Championship this year. Erik is a very nice kid who has played for the team I currently work for. He currently holds our HR record. He can surely hit the hell out of the ball and has “country boy strength.” He is probably an average defender at first base and an average runner also. He is prone to the strikeout at times, but when he connects…you definitely won’t see that ball again. So congrats to him.
I watched all the draftee videos and they all look decent. The Yankees seemed to have drafted lots of lefty arms this year as expected. Who knows, they might find a diamond in the rough.
