Please read this debate from Joe Posnanski (from PeteAbe) as he breaks down Derek Jeter and Pete Rose. It’s a must read (really long though).
Couple things about it:
-We don’t know what kind of player Derek Jeter is going to be after the age of 35.
-There are no respected quantifiable statistics to measure defensive worth. We can only measure what we see.
-It has been said that Jeter could eventually be moved to outfield and potentially be above average.
-Jeter – Rose – Slaughter – Cobb. That tells you something about Jeter and Rose. By the way I consider Ty Cobb the best ballplayer of all time.
-What the heck was Posada doing on ‘that play’?
-Can ‘baseball sense’ be measured?
-I would imagine and this is purely a guess, (have never seen Rose play) Jeter is more physically and athletically gifted. Seems like Rose had to work harder for his achievements. Not meant to be a knock by any means, but that says a lot of Rose’s desire and character.
-Leadership qualities of Jeter and Rose? Jeter essentially could do more.
-Who is more clutch (might have missed that in his blog)?
-Breakdown of moving runners over and sacrifice hits for Jeter and Rose (might have missed that again)?
-Playoff statistics of both?
-Just a comment, but you gotta love Buck O’neill. Is he in the Hall of Fame yet?
-Who is better? Ask me in 10 years.
